Irene Mas Salom, soprano – Marine Fribourg, alto
Luis Martínez Pueyo, flûte et direction
Madrid – Fundación BBVA – 6 avril 2024

« The vocal part was provided by Majorcan soprano Irene Mas Salom and French mezzo Marine Fribourg. Both displayed impressive assurance, reflected in remarkable intonation and technical mastery, but above all a perfect balance between expressivity and the restraint demanded by the character of this music. Suspensions, breaks in rhythm and inflections always were executed with subtlety, with perfectly controlled vibrato and clear, crisp delivery. […]

Marine Fribourg is a highly versatile musician - she is also a choral conductor and plays the viola da gamba - with a beautiful, full-bodied vocal timbre, a homogeneous register and well-projected low notes.

When they sang together (three of the five laments), their voices married perfectly, and we were able to appreciate two singers with great personality. »

« Katharine Dain’s agile, round soprano, the vibrant yet mellow mezzo-soprano of Marine Fribourg, Guy Cutting’s supple and lustrous tenor voice, and the deep warmth of baritone Drew Santini are all portals to the composer’s shimmering sound-world. »

« Lively and convincing... phenomenal. A first CD they can be proud of. »

« Praise to Damask, who with the French pianist Flore Merlin have ensured a perfectly executed, imaginative recital, recorded flawlessly by Frerik de Jong, which certainly leaves us wanting much more. »

« Damask Vocal Quartet, a true ensemble and not only the sum of four individuals […] offers a remarkable fusion of timbres and palpable collaborative energy. »

« Mezzo Fribourg shines in the Agnus Dei. What power but also suppleness in the extremes of dynamics de ce mouvement final ! »

« Mezzo Fribourg schittert in het Agnus Dei. Wat een kracht maar ook souplesse in de uitersten aan dynamiek van dit prachtige slotdeel »

[…] « Marine Fribourg manifestily prefers pure emotion and the sincere joy of faith to ostentation. The enthusiasm of a Pachelbel is reinforced here, carried by serene felicity, imbued with the tender poetry of a Vater unser Himmelreich whose happiness is ideally contagious. Another major asset, and by no means the least, of this young choir is the impeccable pronunciation and scansion of the German, the fruit of technical mastery and a remarkable understanding of the text. » […]
